Province of the Massachusetts Bay. 1737. Five Pence. Fr. MA-86. PCGS Choice Very Fine-35 Details. Multiple Repairs. As illustrated.

Description: Sturdy laid paper. No Serial number. Signature redrawn later and false. 78mm by 66mm. “This BILL of FIVE PENCE Equal to One Shilling & three Pence of the Old Tenour” back. The “Circular Frame” vignette is by John Bushell, and the note was printed by John Draper. Rare, as are all the notes of this 1737 small-denomination series. The fact that four of the six different denominations are offered here is an event unto itself, certainly something that has not occurred since the 2004 Ford Sale noted below, and probably something that may not occur again. That, of course, depends on who the lucky bidder or bidders are when these notes cross the auction block.

Pedigree: Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate; Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford Collection, Part III, May, 2004, Lot 518. (Ford Price Realized: $3,737.50)
