Province of Pennsylvania. June 21, 1759. Fifty Shillings or Two Pounds Ten Shillings Indented Bill. Fr. PA-103. PCGS Very Good-10 Details. Multiple Repairs, Design Redrawn, Signatures Redrawn. As illustrated.

Description: Thinner paper. Serial No. 585. Plate D. Signed by I. Greenleafe, Jn. Ord, and Evan Morgan. Two-Sided, red and black ink both sides. Printed by Benjamin Franklin and David Hall. Printed Leaves back design. 85mm by 67mm. To Counterfeit Is Death, this time with Franklin’s admonition in bold red. An exceptional example given the assigned grade. Originally backed by cardboard that has been successfully worked off the back. Though nominally faded, the red and black ink still maintains a lively contrast throughout. Well-circulated, of course, yet the note still maintains a crisp dignity. “This is a rare series, the notes unpriced in Newman, due to being a withdrawn issue,” noted the Ford specialist. (The Crown and local Governor did not agree to the issue and ordered it withdrawn. By the time the Crown’s edict reached Pennsylvania, virtually the entire printing run of 36,650 Pounds across the denomination spectrum had been passed into circulation. The Crown and its colonial representatives managed to redeem all but 865 Pounds of the issue.) Only one serious bidder will be taking this lot home, but we probably do not need to remind you of that.
