Province of New-Jersey. March 25, 1724. Six Shillings. Fr. NJ-24CF. PCGS Choice Fine-15 Details. Multiple Repairs, Backed. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper. Serial No. 18. “Signed” by (Jacob) Parker, faintly, R. L. (Robert Lettis) Hooper, and Ja. Trent. 90mm by 145mm, a “tall” note. Uniface. Burlington issued. Verso backing paper reads “hisx, Henkel Sale May 4, 1922.” The Newman Plate Note. Most likely a contemporary counterfeit; the plate details are weak, suggesting a spurious origin. That notwithstanding, this is one seriously rare note in any grade and in any status, genuine or spurious. Among the earliest New Jersey notes obtainable - the first three series on the province are not plated in Newman, despite that man’s search of nearly 40 years to find an example to photograph. The Ford cataloger paid tribute to this note, writing: “An exceptionally historic piece of paper money from a state with a fervent numismatic history. Seriously underrated in value compared to the avidly collected copper coin series.” A grand note, qualifiers and all, and a piece that will elevate any current colonial note cabinet to a new level, and especially so for a New Jersey specialist.
