Description: Laid paper with MARYLAND watermark. Serial No. 3422. Signed by George Steuart, J. Bullen, and Charles Hammond. 180mm by 70mm. Uniface. An impressively rare note, and an issue that may have appeared in a Stack’s sale for the first time ever at the Ford event. Though cleaned up a bit by careful curation -- black and white copies of the note are included for comparison – its dark, original appearance has been enhanced to the better in our eyes. It is still the same rare note, only now somewhat more attractive. Thoughtfully, the original paper backing was retained, and it still bears what may be Wayte Raymond’s penciled “April 6, 1751.” The Newman Plate Note; Mr. Newman really did not have many examples to choose from when he produced his landmark The Early Paper Money of America. A bold start to our Maryland pieces.
