Province of Georgia. March 25, 1762 One Pound. “Fort and Battery” vignette. Fr. GA-43. PCGS Very Good-10 Details. Multiple Repairs, Repaired Pinholes. As illustrated.

Description: Sturdy laid paper. Serial No. 458. Signed by Nobel Jones, Grey Elliott, Lewis Johnson, John Graham, and Alex. Wylly. 150mm by 115mm. Uniface. This historical issue was printed “for the erecting [of] a Fort and Battery at Cockspur and a Lookout on Midway River…” for what would become Fort George. The Newman Plate Note. The in-hand appearance is substantial and the touch-up qualifiers listed by PCGS are easily forgiven within the historic context and the overall rarity of the issue. Only 540 Pounds Sterling was authorized for this issue, therefore, the highest possible serial number was 540. Authorized by the Act of December 19, 1761, the issue raised funding for the construction of Fort George, overlooking Savannah Harbor. A rare prize, indeed.
