Popular and High Grade 1849 Mormon Five Dollars. 1849 Deseret Assay Office. Mormon $5.00 Gold. Kagin-2. Rarity-5. AU-58 PCGS. This frosty, bright yellow-gold Mormon $5 enjoys a whisper of olive iridescence throughout the lustrous surfaces. Plenty of mint bloom remains in the protected design areas of this handsome rarity. The strike is sufficient for the type, with bold clasped hands and cuff details, and with a relatively bold 8 in the date. No deep or otherwise egregious marks mar the surfaces despite the brief stay in circulation, making this the ideal candidate for an advanced Gold Rush-era cabinet. In our opinion, the fact that this specimen wasn’t melted says a lot about its overall eye appeal – perhaps it was hand-selected for an old-time 19th-century collection and then down in that manner to today’s collecting community.

The PCGS Population Report offers few top-notch grading events for this elusive issue, as illustrated below. Here is an ideal time to secure an example of Brigham Young’s monetary brainchild, a coin that is near the top for overall quality in the eyes of PCGS.
Obverse: clasped hands, date 1849 below, G.S.L.C.P.G. and FIVE DOLLARS around.
Reverse: bishop’s miter and all-seeing eye at center, HOLINESS TO THE LORD around.
Edge: Plain.
Die alignment: 180 degrees.
PCGS Population: 2; 3 finer (MS-63 finest).
