Title: Popular "Peacock" (Eagle and Rays) Reverse
Description: 1853 F.D. octagonal 50 Cents, BG-302, Die State I (perfect dies, clear repunching on 50 and T), Eagle With Rays (so-called “Peacock”) reverse, PCGS Genuine, Repaired - UNC Detail. Known to have been issued in the year dated: three were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott, which sailed December 1, 1853. Same head, 13 stars around, F.D. behind, but Frontier & Deviercy replaced the Humbert style eagle with one adapted from the new 1853 Arrows and Rays half dollars (perhaps thinking that this design change was permanent), 50.CENTS below. Very popular type; nicknamed “peacock” by Kagin’s founder A.M. Kagin many years ago because of the resemblance of the rays to tail feathers. Bright gold color, edge filed? PCGS Genuine Repaired - UNC Detail "Peacock" William C. O’Connor (PCGS# 10422).
