Pleasing AU 1884-CC Eagle. 1884-CC Gold $10. Winter 1-A. AU-53 NGC. This modestly circulated deep yellow-gold specimen enjoys bursts of orange-gold in the protected design areas. One of 9,925 examples of the date produced in Nevada’s capital city mint, with most of that mintage enduring long-term use in commerce – today VF to EF is normal for surviving examples, and AU and finer grades are considered scarce to rare the farther up the grading ladder one climbs. Indeed, NGC has records of just one certification event for Mint State examples of the date, that one a lofty MS-65 specimen. The present coin is not as heavily abraded as many examples, with the abrasions a normal occurrence for the date according to the Winter reference. While not entirely mark-free, this specimen is certainly a far cry from the “deep, detracting abrasions” described for most examples in that reference. We expect numerous collectors will vie for this popular scarcity at bidding time!
