Description: 1856 octagonal ¼ Dollar, BG-111, Die State III (polished dies), PCGS MS62. Similar to preceding except for date. An original issue, certainly minted in 1856. When the S.S. Central America sank Sept. 12, 1857 (passengers boarded the S.S. Sonora in San Francisco Aug. 20, 1857), some passengers had examples of this type mixed with their gold dust; 21 pieces of this type were recovered in the two searches. Two of these coins are of a later die state, IV. Select Brilliant Uncirculated, unbroken luster, tiny scratch before face. PCGS MS62 6565William C. O'Connor (PCGS# 10380).
