Title: Only Octagonal Quarter Issued by Joseph Bros.
Description: [b]1853 Octagonal ¼ Dollar Breen-Gillio (BG)-101, Die State III (rust and nose “broken,” from overpolishing die). PCGS MS61. The only octagonal quarter dollar issued by Joseph Brothers, the first firm to make California 25¢ and 50¢ gold pieces, according to the statement of Nathan Joseph (the youngest brother) in 1910. Small head, 9 stars around; denomination curved, date below. Very neat and professional work, as would be expected from these Liverpool watchmakers, goldsmiths, silversmiths, and jewelers. Known to have actually been issued in 1853: five examples were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott, which sailed December 1, 1853. Rare. Lovely bright Uncirculated, light violet toning in fields. Certified by PCGS as MS61 in a special holder pedigreed to William C. O'Connor (PCGS# 10370).
