One of Just Two Certified Deseret Currency Association $1. 1858 $1 Deseret Currency Association. Great Salt Lake City, Utah. Type 2. Nyholm 110. Rust 95. PMG Fine 12 NET. September 21, 1858. This is a Type 2 with the engraved signature of Brigham Young. Type 1 notes which are a different style of this series do exist in the denominations of $1-$2-$3 and $5. They come with both hand signed signatures and engraved signatures of Brigham Young and also were a target of forger Mark Hofmann. Both Type 1 and Type 2 notes are quite rare and only come to market occasionally. It is sometimes years between offerings.
This note has multiple splits and foxing plus a significant piece missing from the bottom left corner. They were printed essentially on onion skin for paper and most did not hold up well in circulation.
Notable these notes were referred to as “Moo Money” as they were issued in 1858 and are the only currency ever issued in the United States by any entity to be backed by livestock! The actual heard of cattle roamed on Antelope Island surrounded by the Great Salt Lake.
Extremely Rare!
One of Just two notes certified by PMG (the other is VF-30).
