Title: Old Walrus Tusk
Description: An old walrus tusk, 12” long. In the period 1313-1326, tithes were collected in Greenland in the form of walrus tusks (and hides) to finance a Crusade and were converted to cash by Flemish merchants, since walrus tusks were not used as money in Denmark at this time. More recently, Alaskan natives used whole tusks and pieces of tusks as money, and the Hudson's Bay Company accepted them in payment in all of their stores. See Opitz, pp. 364-65.
