Deep steel-gray with some surface brightness in the protected areas on both sides. This specimen is far finer overall than the discovery piece, also an iron brockage, but one that evidently saw use as a pocket piece or that actually escaped into circulation. Dies: Robinson in stovepipe hat with rifle over shoulder and dividing date 18 and 69, YANKEE ROBINSON arcs above, THE GREAT COMEDIAN curves below. The reverse of the token is a sunken and reversed mirror image of the obverse. It is uncertain whether this die was used to produce tokens for commercial use. We have great expectations for this small bit of iron numismatic history at bidding time. Fayette Lodawick “Yankee” Robinson (1818-1884) was a showman extraordinaire second only to Barnum in his day. Yankee – few knew him by any other name – was a direct descendant of a Mayflower Pilgrim, Dr. Robinson, and was at various times an actor, comedian, shoemaker, and eventually a circus owner. He was also a prominent Mason and his burial was arranged by that organization.
