Another issue absolutely certain to have been made in 1853; two examples were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott, which sailed December 1, 1853, one Die State I and the other Die State II (see Lots 052 and 053). Made by Nouizillet and issued in great numbers; probably the commonest Period One small California gold piece available to collectors. Small Liberty head left, surrounded by 12 stars; value in wreath. Flashy Gem Brilliant Uncirculated.
