Title: Mexico. Empire of Iturbide. 1823-JM Gold 8 Escudos. Fr-60, Calico Onza-1779, KM-314. Large Head. EF-40 NGC
Description: Dies as illustrated. The warm yellow-gold surfaces offer mark-free quality throughout, as well as lustrous mint bloom in the protected design areas. Some old hairlines and perhaps traces of a thumbing that occurred long ago are present, but you need to know what you’re looking for. The piece has recovered so nicely over the years from what was once a commonplace occurrence that, even in 2005, NGC thought nothing of the overall effects on the coin and called it EF-40 without a qualifier. A rare issue from the waning months of Iturbide’s shaky and unpopular reign, and scarcer than its 1822-dated 8 escudos counterpart. The pedigree chain here is numismatically impeccable: John H. Clapp; the Clapp Estate; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; an unnamed intermediary; and now, you! This is only the second auction appearance of this coin since 1942 – ANR in 2005, and now Kagin’s Inc. in 2021. The search for one fortunate aficionado ends here; we hope the underbidders don’t have to wait 16 more years for their next chance.
