Title: Mexico. Empire of Iturbide. 1822-JM Half Real. Mexico City Mint. KM-301. Silver. MS-65 NGC
Description: Dies as illustrated. An impressive example of the smallest of the silver Iturbide issues. The steel-gray fields are chiefly reflective, and the devices are modestly frosted. Warm and deep gold, blue, and rose iridescence engages the obverse, while the reverse is alive with pale orange-gold and pale sky-blue tones. The strike is bold throughout with only a trace of weakness on the eagle’s leg and talon, the design high points. Truly an exceptional half real, and a tribute to assayer Joaquin Davila Madrid, JM, and his brief duties at the behest of Augustin I Iturbide (1822-1823), as well as to the collecting eye of the late John Jay Pittman.
