Title: Mexico. Empire of Iturbide. 1822-JM Gold 8 Escudos. Fr-59, Calico Onza-1778, KM-313.1. AU-58 NGC
Description: Dies as illustrated. The deep yellow-gold surfaces offer lively luster with modest dashes of mint frost presiding in the protected areas. Some light rub is present on the high points, but to no great detriment to the overall design or appearance. Struck at least twice on the obverse, with the crushed remnants of the first strike easily found among the peripheral legends and the date area. The reverse offers its own curiosity; it was struck from a cracked and collapsing die, with the visual evidence at the denomination and the following S and J in the legend. This piece represents a study in mint gaffes, all of which add to the desirability of the coin in the eyes of many collectors. Some collectors consider this the last of the Colonial Mexico issues, and others consider it the beginning of the Republic issues, though in actuality it occupies a unique niche in Mexico’s coinage history as an Empire issue between the two other eras. An example of the scarce 1822 Iturbide gold 8 escudos is a must for any advanced Mexican gold type set, and the present coin represents what is an infrequent auction appearance of the date at best. A frequently unheralded gold rarity of Mexico is about to change hands, and we salute the new steward!
