Title: Mexico. Empire of Iturbide. 1822-JM 8 Reales. Mexico City Mint. KM-304. Silver. MS-63 NGC
Description: Dies as illustrated. This frosty and lustrous 8 reales is at once sharply struck for the type and essentially mark-free to the naked eye. Colorful throughout, it offers a sheen of pale peach iridescence across both sides, and the emperor’s portrait bears witness to pale sky-blue highlights. The details are sharp for the most part, with only a trace of softness on the eagle’s breast, the coin’s high point. Struck from rusted dies, with the evidence – tiny raised dots and “islands” -- plain under low magnification. We don’t know for certain whether the NGC Census, currently five MS-63 pieces, represents five separate coins or a resubmission or two. Either way, the present lustrous piece is near the pinnacle of quality for the date and type.
NGC Census: 5; 1 finer (MS-64).
