Merchant Token. Missouri. Westport. Circa 1853-1854. Abraham M. Abrahams. Miller Mo 41, B-506. Brass. 27 mm. AU-55 NGC. Dies: as shown. Deep olive-gold with whispers of brighter gold and retained luster on both sides. Sharply struck, lightly circulated, and not noticeably marked, even under low magnification.
This is one of the earliest American Jewish merchant tokens (Mr. Abrahams and his wife are buried in a Jewish cemetery in St. Louis, discovered by Eric P. Newman). Abrahams was an early pioneer Western outfitter that served settlers on their way to the Wild West. A very popular, scarce Washington piece that is quite challenging this nice.
