Dies signed Hermon Mac Neil SC, and illustrated above. Edge: GORHAM CO. BRONZE. This satiny beauty is virtually pristine with just a tiny blemish in the field below SI in EXPOSITION separating it from numismatic perfection. Intense luster ignites both sides of the medal, and the surfaces appear more matte-like than anything else. Awarded to Baldomero Mayer, though this writer’s paltry internet skills failed to yield a shred of identity for that name; perhaps the next steward will discover the “who and what” of the medal’s long-ago recipient. Designed by Hermon Atkins MacNeil of Standing Liberty quarter fame, 1916-1930, this medal was issued in bronze as well as gilt bronze as here, silver, and gold, and was typically awarded to Exposition dignitaries and others of prominence as well as talented artisans and the like at the 1901 Exposition. MacNeil’s reverse rendering of two Native Americans establishing North and South American unity via the central peace pipe is a masterpiece of medallic art in America. Housed in a super-jumbo NGC holder befitting the medal’s size.
