Description: Rigid thin stock with inverted cursive ‘MS’ watermark. Standard designs by Revere and Gill. Serial No. 1899. Signed by Ivers and Cheever. 82mm by 96mm. Two-Sided. A spectacular note from any viewpoint. Called “an absolutely museum-worthy example” in Ford, the writer there could not wax proudly enough while describing this great and important – historically as well as numismatically – note. The centering is excellent, as is the paper quality, the tones of the paper itself, and the overall aesthetics. PCGS found no fault with this piece, and its latest steward saw no reason to try to make the note any more impressive than it already is through curating. Back to Ford: “This note is an absolute miracle of care, preservation, and survival. We have not heard of another note from this series, in this lofty grade, that compares to this note offered publicly.” The writer also expressed that the present gem was “very high, if not the highest note, on the Condition Census for the type, and perhaps for the entire series. Here, then, is a note that truly lives up to all its previous cataloging hopes. The bidders in the Ford sale drove this piece to near-atmospheric heights, where it realized well into the five-figure mark when the dust settled. We see no reason for this beautiful rarity to perform any differently this time around.
