Massachusetts State. November 17, 1776. Sixteen Shillings. Fr. MA-248. PCGS About Uncirculated-55 Details. Serial Number Redrawn, Small Restorations. As illustrated.

Description: Rigid thick stock. Serial No. 2085, altered to 3089 in dark, modern ink. Signed by J. Goodwin. 76mm by 97mm. Two-sided, engraved and printed by Paul Revere. Light penciled writing at upper left back corner, possibly by H. Chapman and referencing his 1920 Henkels Sale purchase. The Ford writer noted “Other than the altered number, the note is essentially Uncirculated, and has not circulated in our opinion.” This note is about as “New” as a note can be to our eyes, but the PCGS grade is still substantial enough to impart the overall quality of this special note. When last offered, the present piece saw wild bidding activity and realized a strong price. We’re certain that the same outcome awaits this rarity this time around.

Pedigree: From Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part X, May, 2005, Lot 4705. (Ford Price Realized: $6,325)
