Title: Massachusetts Bay Colony. 1652 Oak Tree Shilling. Noe-5, Crosby 2-D, Salmon-3D, W-470. VF-25 PCGS
Header: Pleasing VF 1652 Oak Tree Shilling
Description: 65.74 grains. Even steel gray throughout the obverse, the reverse with iridescent blue highlights here and there. Off-center at the obverse bottom, rim through TS IN MA of the legend, softness in the tree motif from an old but subtle bend and circulation, heavy cud at rim above THV, this side worn but not noticeably marked. Reverse evenly centered with the rim tight to the tops of EW ENGLA but not imposing, not noticeably marked; the aforementioned bend has eliminated the usually prominent central dot. Reverse die state considerably later than that on Ford:24 and 25, and as late as the reverse seen for Ford’s Noe-6, lot 26 (all Stack’s, October, 2005). Certainly, a fine specimen of Oak Tree shilling coinage, a coin with few problems and in a nice median grade.
