Just a simply beautiful coin! The rich and deep yellow-gold surfaces are aglow with lively embedded cartwheel activity, and the arm’s length appeal goes beyond substantial. Take a loupe to this gem and you’ll come away virtually empty handed in the blemish department. Considered by many to be the most beautiful of all United States coins, this Augustus Saint-Gaudens masterpiece is among the most avidly pursued coins of the 20th Century. The writer once cataloged a grading set of this issue many moons ago, with coins that ranged through every single grade from VF-20 to MS-65 – this coin is popular in any and all grades as that long-ago sale proved. Highly deserving of the “+” designation; we’re surprised this beauty hasn’t yet made it to CAC! Don’t miss this one; it could very well be the nicest for the assigned grade you may ever see.
Called “Wire Edge” by PCGS from the start, but the edge is lettered; there is a wire rim or fin on this variety caused by excess metal flowing upward and out of the dies, but there is no wire edge.
