Lawful Money of the Massachusetts-Bay. 1750. One Seventy second of a Dollar Or, One Penny. Fr. MA-134. PCGS Extremely Fine-40 Details. Minor Design Redrawn, Repaired Splits and Tears. As illustrated.

Description: Sturdy laid paper. No Serial number. Signed by A. Bordman. 87mm by 58mm. Uniface. Codfish and pine tree vignettes flank the central printing. Much the same as it appeared in the Ford sale, but with a center split repair that is not overly ambitious and is totally suitable to the attractive overall appearance. Two stickers were originally attached to the back of the note, one that read “asxx / 2-20-1912 / From CiB,” and another that simply read “on.” (“CiB” refers to Charles I Bushnell, the first recognizable steward of the note; it then passed to Henry Chapman, then to F.C.C. Boyd’s Estate, and then to Ford.) At “one seventy second of a dollar,” this rarity gives new definition to “small-change.” The Ford writer confessed to never having seen an example for sale at auction until the present piece was offered in Ford – that is how rare it is!

Pedigree: Ex Charles I. Bushnell; Henry Chapman; F.C.C. Boyd Estate; Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part III, May, 2004, Lot 540. (Ford Price Realized: $3,737.50)
