Title: Large Ethiopian Salt Bar
Description: Abyssinia/Ethiopia, salt bar money. The salt was quarried from the mountains and wrapped in leaves at the corners to protect it. In the early 18th century, an East India merchant wrote, "The current small money of Ethiopia is salt." As recently as 1899, actual coins were only used in the capital itself, the rest of Ethiopia insisting on salt in payment. There were four denominations of salt bar, depending on length; at one foot, this would appear to be the highest denomination, 1-1/2 dollars. See Quiggin, pp. 54-56 and Fig. 8; also Opitz, pp. 290-91 (this bar illustrated p. 290).
