日本 北海道 松前小判金 玩賞品 金銀図録 4-50 竹川-82 約12.71g PCGS XF (ツーリング)

An interesting gold koban in a diamond shape said in the reference books to be of high purity. The gold came from Shiriuchi in the southern part of Hokkaido. Matsumae was a former castle town at the northern edge of the Japan empire (southern part of Hokkaido) during the Edo period and named after the Matsumae clan. It was a prosperous trading town protected by Matsumae castle, which was the only castle to be built on the island of Hokkaido. The obverse has three flowers stamped around the edge with a center symbol. The meaning of the central symbol has been lost to time and was probably a native inhabitant's symbol used on the island in ancient times. Below this symbol are the characters for Matsumae. This type was possibly struck as far back as the early 1600's. Some faint tooling found on the surfaces. Weight 12.71g.
