Title: Iron Spearpoint Money, Kwanyama Bridegroom Status Token
Description: In Gabon, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea, iron spearpoints called egbwe le would buy a day's work circa 1906. This example, about 8" long, has lost some of its original outline due to rust. Farther south, in Namibia, the Kwanyama Tribe, a subtribe of the Ovambo Tribe, carved ornaments of bone or similar material in the shape of rounded pyramids, with an ornamental border highlighted in red paint made from powdered wood and the juice of aloes. They were called ekipas. On his wedding day, a Kwanyama bridegroom presented his bride with one or more ekipas, depending on how much livestock he owned. These two items are lacking in nearly every collection of African traditional money/wealth items. Both are illustrated in the NNP edition, https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/book/541824, p. 216 right, top and bottom.
