Title: Iron Currency Hoes
Description: Iron hoes of various shapes were used for money by many tribes. In this lot are two such pieces from Nigeria: a giant piece of sheet metal forged in the shape of a hoe with protrusions at the corners, made by the Angas Tribe in Wokos village. The largest money item ever made by an African blacksmith, it would buy a slave. Even in 1967 it was very rare. See Opitz, p. 158, and Ballarini, The Perfect Form: On the Track of African Tribal Currency, (Milan, 2009), p. 169 (illustrated in NNP edition, https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/book/541824?page=252, right center). The second Nigerian iron hoe in this lot is 11" long and more rounded; illustrated in Opitz, p. 158, right, second from top.
