Illinois. Chicago. 1892-1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. Uncle Sam – Columbian 50¢ Model. Silvered Metal. Flat Ribbed Bottom. Flip-Top Opening. 64 X 37 X 14 mm. Embossed. Overall EF. Front: Uncle Sam stands right, facing left, left hand in pocket, right arm outstretched, fingers gripping rim of a “coin” that appears remarkably similar to the 1892-1893 Columbian Exposition half dollars sold at the fair, Uncle Sam’s head separates from his body when the flip-top is opened, 13 five-pointed stars surround his head. Back: 30 five-pointed stars adorn the flip-top, American eagle with four arrows, olive branch, and ribbon holds suspended model remarkably similar to the reverse of the Columbian 50¢. Flip-top works perfectly, 986 stamped inside rim of flip-top. Deep silver-gray throughout with slate highlights that serve to highlight the patriotic motifs. This lot represents a classic example of Americana and numismatics all rolled into one!
