Illinois. Chicago. 1892-1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. “Embalmed” 1892-1893 Columbian Half Dollar. Twice-Wrapped in Leather. Possible Presentation Piece. January 7, 1893. Coin: Unknown Grade. Shell: Fine and better, writing faded. A patch of edge reeding in an otherwise solid shell leads us to believe it’s a Columbian 50¢ within the beige suede insert of this piece. The coin is sown in a delicate manner between two discs of suede held together with yellow stitching around the perimeter. The outer shell is deep tan leather and held together with the same yellow thread, but the ensuing 125 years has tattered the delicate threads for about half of the circumference. Both sides of the outer shell exhibit faint traces of writing, one side with a probable central image inside a legend, the other side with six lines of old script writing; “Jan’y 7, 1893” is all that the writer can determine. Rare and perhaps even unique. This could have been a presentation piece for one of the first impressions from the dies – or produced for any number of other reasons as well. A highlight of this section, and an impressive bit of Columbiana!
