Title: Hairpin, Fishhook Money
Description: The Iranian Safavid shah Isma`il I, 1501-1524, introduced money made from a folded-over piece of silver wire for the Indian Ocean trade, minted at Lar and Jarun; they were called "larins" from the mint name. Since this curious currency resembles hairpins, it has been called "hairpin money." While the earliest pieces are very rare, the larin became strangely popular and was imitated for centuries by the Ottomans and other dynasties. In the 17th century, private persons in Sri Lanka were authorized to make larins, and these are distinguished having a double bend, giving them a fishhook shape. Thus lot presents a mini type collection of larins, with three straight pieces (inscriptions unread) and two from Sri Lanka in fishhook shape. See Opitz, p. 199.
