Gem Proof 1863 Postage Currency 10¢
Finest Certified by NGC 1863 Pattern Ten-Cents. Judd-329, Pollock-399. Block (Imperfect) Tin. Plain Edge. Coin Turn. Rarity-6-. Proof-65 NGC. CAC. Obv: federal-style shield at center, crossed arrows behind, laurel sprigs at top, EXCHANGED FOR arcs above, U.S. NOTES curves below. Rev: 10 / CENTS / 1869 on three lines, floret to each side, POSTAGE CURRENCY arcs above, ACT JULY 1862 curves below. Fully brilliant and boldly lustrous with a strong strike and exceptional eye appeal. The surfaces exhibit a lively “crinkly” effect under low magnification. Struck as a possible solution to redeem the near-countless Postage and Fractional Currency pieces that circulated in lieu of small change, which was hoarded en masse by the public during the Civil War. The uspatterns.com website notes that “39 were struck in block (impure) tin on May 20, 1863, in the weights of 21 and 27 grains.” See our Encased Postage Stamp Collection in Session Two. (Weight of this specimen unknown due to encapsulation.) The finest of just three grading events for the variety at NGC, and deservedly so! Housed in an old-style “fatty” NGC holder.
NGC Census: 1; none finer.
