Fr. 300. 1891 $10 Silver Certificate. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
This lot is one of the most enticing of the federal issues we are offering as it simply is downright rare at Gem levels. This note is one of just two pieces PMG has graded for the catalog number at this level and we could argue that this note could be graded a point finer. The note gathers its nickname from the tombstone shaped frame surrounding the portrait of Thomas A. Hendricks, the vice President of the United States under Grover Cleveland’s first administration. His passing was just prior to the finalization of the 1886 series Silver Certificates, the series where this design was incepted, and the President approved the design in remembrance of the late Vice President.
Typically, these notes are very low quality when available and even then, they are scarce. Extremely Fine notes command quite a premium. Uncirculated material is rare and then, there are true Gem Uncirculated notes, such as this which are numismatic treasures. The quality found on this Bruce – Roberts signed variety is remarkable with perfectly original paper throughout, great detail at all design features and, in our mind, Superb centering. Certainly, a piece that would be at home within even the finest of collections.
