Fr. 289. 1880 $10 Silver Certificate. PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45.
United States federally issued Silver Certificates commenced with the short lived 1878 series which are all rare notes and seldom available. These 1880 notes carried mostly similar basic designs and again started at the $10 denomination. The design features a prominent portrait vignette of Robert Morris at left, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. A large brown treasury seal at top center with ornate X counter below. The back features a dark brown ink with the word SILVER in large letters across the back to help identify the precious metal backing the notes. Typically when offered, these notes are found with repairs or other small defects and problem free for the grade material such as this bright Extremely Fine note are the exception. PMG has graded only a single other circulated example finer than this piece with just a small handful of Uncirculated notes in their report. An opportunity that should not be taken lightly as these simply do not show up for sale publicly too often.
