Fr. 161. 1880 $50 Legal Tender. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
A powerful higher denomination large-size legal tender note that is the only catalog number for the design with any semblance of availability. Just a miniscule run of Uncirculated notes comprises most known pieces on this Huston – Rosecrans large brown treasury seal type with PMG grading two at this Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ level. A familiar bust of Ben Franklin at left and a bold depiction of Liberty, dressed as Columbia, right. Although the most available in high grade for the design, auction appearances do not reflect the trait as collectors typically hold these notes dear.
Seeing such a scarce design in this lofty a grade is quite the sight for any collector and the note is certainly fully qualified for the assigned grade by PMG. The appeal is resounding with perfect impressions of both the face and back and the margins would make one think a Gem assessment would not be out of the question. We feel the only limiting factor in grade is the lower left margin being a touch smaller than the other three corners. Great registration of the face to back and exceptional detail of the popular large brown treasury seal.
