All denominations beyond the $10 note for this coveted "Rainbow" series are rare and this $50 note is no exception. Track and Price lists a scant 68 known pieces for this attractive design which is unique for the series date as it was not carried over to the 1874 series. Shown with a portrait vignette of Henry Clay at lower right and an Allegory of Peace at left. These higher denominations lacked the attractive green under-printing seen on lesser denomination althrough the appealing blue tinted paper is observed here along with the large red spiked treasury seal. Just a few of these notes reach the auction block every year and they are mostly in mid-grade levels such as this offering. The overall appeal for the grade is quite strong and one would find it hard to argue had this note been graded five points finer. The restoration is very subtle and almost indiscernable when looking through the holder. A note which would make a large impact in any collection it enters.
