Fantastic Kellogg & Humbert Central America Ingot
Serial #826, 85.35 Ounces. California. San Francisco. Circa 1857 Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot. Serial Number: 826. Weight: 85.35 Ounces. Fineness: .896. Ex Central America Treasure. The face of this mammoth ingot reads: No. 826 with KELLOGG / & / HUMBERT / ASSAYERS in rectangle below serial number, 85.35 Oz. / .896 FINE / $1580.85 below rectangle, fineness test cut shows at lower right corner on face but is much more pronounced at the lower left on the reverse face. Back face reads: 826 at top, otherwise plain. Some deep red sea-cake resides in the hollowed area of the reverse. The writer remembers viewing this particular ingot at the 2000 ANA World’s Fair of Money show as part of the Ship of Gold Exhibit – and from the inside out! Dave Bowers and the writer were inside the exhibit, knee deep in treasure, and enjoying the looks on visitors’ faces when they peeked through one of the portholes at the treasure inside! To think that this massive piece of gold once had a value of only $1,580.85; that value that has grown by leaps and bounds ever since the recovery of the Central America treasure and now must certainly be in the six-figure range based on its weight alone. We can’t wait until this enormous piece of American history comes up for bids, as treasure fans and numismatists alike will have a stake in the action when this unique item enters the auction arena.
