Famed 1853-FD Peacock Reverse Half Dollar
Ex Jay Roe Collection. 1853-FD Octagonal 50¢. BG-302. Liberty Head. Perched Eagle or “Peacock” Reverse. Rarity-4-. MS-63 PCGS. This lustrous California half dollar is a strong representative example of the grade and variety combination. The deep yellow-gold centers give way immediately to deep orange-gold toning that deepens as it approaches the peripheries; the effect is boldest on the obverse. Style with F.D. maker’s mark in field behind Liberty’s head. The glory of rays behind the perched eagle on this ever-popular design type – a must-have for a California Small Denomination or “Cal Frac” collector – gives rise to the “peacock” moniker first popularized by our own Art Kagin. It is, however, plainly an eagle on an arrow with tail feathers below. Choice for the grade with high aesthetics all around.
Maker: Frontier, Deviercy & Co., active 1853-1864.
Edge: Reeded.
Die Alignment: 360 degrees or medal turn.
Die State: I, “Perfect dies; clear repunching on 50 and T, which extra outlines gradually fade.”
