Extremely Rare Boston $20 Red Seal
One of Four Known Fr. 952b. 1914 $20 Federal Reserve Note. Red Seal. Boston. PMG Extremely Fine 40. A tremendous rarity and one of the most important pieces of this comprehensive collection. Boston red seal notes from the 1914 series are all scarce to rare and this $20 denomination is certainly a key to all notes of this desirable seal color. This piece is the Jim Thompson example and last was seen in a public setting in a Stacks 1991 sale. The next appearance of the catalog number would not come for nearly two decades when the Thomas Flynn example came to market. The Flynn piece is this notes' equal in terms of appeal and quality, besting the other known by a large margin. When it sold in 2008 the bidding was nothing short of spectacular and after a long run it finally settled at an outstanding $138,000. The note would then be offered again in five years where it realized $49,937 in a April 2013 auction, marking the last public appearance for the variety until this offering of Mr. Chambliss' specimen.

With only Four notes in the census and just three of which being sold publicly in the past this offering cannot be understated. The other note is shown in the census with serial number data but no associated grade. Mr. Chambliss' note and the Flynn piece are beautiful Extremely Fine offerings and the other is a recently discovered note in a Fine grade. Radiant overprinting is welcomed and lovely centering helps frame the impression with authority. Free from any distractions and certainly a piece that will captivate all.
From the C.R. Chambliss Collection.
