Title: England. Charles I. Undated (1640-1641) Half Crown. AU-50 NGC
Description: S-2775. 14.99 grams. Star Mintmark. On an oddly shaped planchet, as frequently seen for the issue. The steel-gray centers yield to varied golden hues at the rims, and natural luster is present among the devices. Nicely struck with strong central designs that weaken toward the rims where minor portions of the legends are soft. A Group III type half crown, with scarf jauntily flying from the king’s shoulder. Charles I was beheaded by Oliver Cromwell’s orders in 1649, setting in motion the Commonwealth Era in England. Cromwell himself was later deposed by Charles II upon his triumphal return from France, and sentenced to death. A few years later, Cromwell’s head was dug up, along with the heads of several of his ministers, and displayed on pikes at various gates and locations around London. Some people never forgive or forget.
