Title: Eagle Reverse!
High Rarity 6

Description: 1854 octagonal One Dol, BG-534, Eagle Reverse. PCGS Genuine, Repaired – VF Detail. High Rarity 6. By “Unknown Maker B,” perhaps Auguste Dubois and his associate John Waschwald or John Oswald, struck by them in a secret room in the cellar of a house on the southeast corner of Green and Fayette Streets in San Francisco with all the windows “stained” except one. (The O’Connor Collection also has the half dollar by this maker, with additional details.) Very popular because of the Eagle reverse type.

Large head with Roman nose, 13 stars around; eagle without scroll (!), CALIFORNIA GOLD 1854 above, * ONE DOL * below. (Local imitation of BG-504.) A clad coin; the Jay Roe specimen was tested and found to have a core of 83% gold, 15% silver, and about 2% copper (approximately 20k), plated with a higher-purity alloy of 93% gold, 5% silver, and about 2% copper (22+k). Little actual wear; apparently downgraded because of reverse mount removal damage. Bright yellow gold, very light toning, black adhesions around eagle. PCGS Genuine, Repaired – VF Detail Eagle William C. O’Connor (PCGS# 10511).
