Current Money of Virginia. Act of Assembly Passed March 11, MDCCLX (1760). Two Pounds or Forty Shillings. Fr. VA-37. PCGS Choice Fine-15 Details. Tape Repairs. As illustrated.

Description: Thicker laid paper. Serial No. 1413. Signed by Peyton Randolph and Ro. C. Nicholas. Printer uncertain. Uniface. 80mm by 66mm. Decidedly choice for the grade, the inking on the face only modestly faded. The signatures and serial number are strong. Period pen signatures and mathematical equations on back. “Possibly a contemporary counterfeit as reported in Newman,” wrote the Ford cataloger, who followed up with “However, it might only be printed from a weaker plate state.” Either way, genuine or bogus, it’s a rare note in any grade.

Pedigree: From Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part III, May, 2004, Lot 838. (Ford Price Realized: $1,725)
