Current Money of Virginia. Act of Assembly Passed April 5, MDCCLIX (1759). Five Pounds or Twenty Crowns or 100 Shillings. Fr. VA-32. PCGS About Uncirculated-50 Details. Backed, Corner Reattached. As illustrated.

Description: Sturdy but thin laid paper. Serial No. 237. Signed by Peyton Randolph and Ro. C. Nicholas. Printed by William Hunter. Uniface. 80mm by 65mm. Backed on blue card stock with faint penciled notes, including the date “11/16/06” and a signature; patience by the next steward could unravel the mystery. A great note all around. Creamy paper, the imprint a bit faded, but the serial number and signatures remain strong. Rare, as are all notes issued on this Act, but especially so when found so near to New. Destined for great things at hammer time.

Peyton Randolph (1721-1775) was the son of Sir John Randolph. Born in Williamsburg, he later attended William and Mary College, and then went on to London, where he studied law at Middle Temple. Appointed King’s Attorney for Virginia in 1748, he also served in the House of Burgesses from that year until his death. In 1766, Randolph resigned his King’s Attorney appointment, serving from that point on as Speaker of the House until the Revolution. In the decade prior to his resignation, Randolph was oftentimes at loggerheads with the Governor, inching the young Randolph ever closer to a Patriot’s way of thinking with every confrontation. He was a member of the Continental Congress, serving as its President in 1774 and again in 1775, the year of his passing.
