Coveted Two Cent "Black Jack" J. Gault Encasement J. Gault. 2 Cents, "Black Jack". HB-128, EP-31, S-94. Extremely Fine. One of the most significant encasements in this extraordinary collection and a type that captivates all involved in this numismatic segment. This type always draws attention as the Andrew Jackson Two Cent stamp encased was produced well after the J. Gault production periods. The numismatic allure of these pieces however dates back beyond a century per Reed, certainly helping alleviate any suspicions of their collectability. Our records indicate just four pieces are known with this piece, originally coming out of the Massachusetts Historical Society Collection, the Arnold Perl example, the Ford piece, and the recently sold Raymond M. Waltz piece.

Realizations in the last few decades are routinely north of five figures and the present example last sold within the Mayer Collection where it fetched $13,800. The most recent sale, being the Waltz example, took in $11,750 in a Very Fine state and the record price for the design was the Ford example which cost the winning bidder $18,400. The encasement received the nickname "Black Jack," quite simply due to the color of the stamp and the portrait of the past President Andrew Jackson.

The quality is quite impressive with the case showing pleasing golden tones with some minor dark spots and the frame is seen with a golden color as well with some larger dark toned spots. A clear and appealing stamp and mica is importantly noted with the latter showing only some crazing at the top and under the left tab. Overall a piece that will be a focal point in any collection it enters, bid accordingly.
