Counterfeit C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-CTF-9 (K-20-like Fantasy Die/K-23). With 128 G., 22 Carats, Star. Carolina Gold. Brass. Plain Edge. Rarity-8, Unique. 84 grains. EF.
Frosty in appearance and olive-gold throughout with nary a mark or blemish to be found. Weakly struck at the obverse center with only trace design elements present there, but sharply rendered in all other places. On the obverse, the N of CAROLINA is spindly and oddly proportioned, looking as though it is about to fall over on its shortened right leg, and the G and O of GOLD are closely spaced while the O, L, and D are widely spaced. On the reverse the L in BECHTLER is small and low, and the S in the misspelled DOLARS is distant from the rest of the word. The R punch used in RUTHERF resembles a B punch that had a leg added to make an R. Highly unusual and unique as well, this rare counterfeit has a lot going for it including, we hope, your bid!

Obverse: CAROLINA GOLD: around from 8 to 4 o’clock, 128 G. at center, inverted five-pointed star below, 22 CARATS curves below at rim.
Reverse: C: BECHTLER AT RUTHERF: and star around, 5 at center, incorrect DOLARS starts at the 9 and ends at the 5:30 position in the field.

Die Alignment: about 110 degrees.
