Counterfeit C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-CTF-6 (K-20). With 134 G., Star. Carolina Gold. Brass. Plain Edge. Rarity-High 7. 92.1 grains. VF.
This specimen is deep olive-gold throughout with no serious marks presented to the unaided eye though a glass picks up the roughness of the planchet where not fully struck, especially at the centers, and numerous circulation marks come to the fore as well. The in-hand quality, however, is far finer than our description suggests. The reverse star is comically elongated, and the C in BECHTLER is small, low, and broken at its lower curve. There is a small planchet split that engages both sides at the 3 o’clock position. Rare, as is virtually every piece offered in the Allen Collection, and certain to draw fierce bidding activity among gathered specialists.

Obverse: .CAROLINA GOLD: at rim from 8 to 4 o’clock around, 134.G. at center, inverted five-pointed star beneath, 21 CARATS. curves at rim beneath star.
Reverse: C: BECHTLER: AT RUTHERF. and star around, 5 at center, DOLLARS. curves below.

Die Alignment: 180 degrees or coin turn.

Ex: From the Allan Collection; formerly Garrett Collection, Part I, November 1979, lot 522; Terranova Collection.
