Counterfeit Bechtler Gold $5. August 1, 1834. Kagin-CTF-5 (K-17). 140 G, 20 C. Carolina Gold. Brass or Debased Gold. Plain Edge. Rarity-High 7. 125.9 Grains. Choice EF.
This bright honey-gold specimen is lustrous throughout and bears no signs of mishandling other than the occasional faint hairline. The die work is excellent on both sides. The star on the reverse is repunched, as is the B in BECHTLER. The 1 in the date is completely right of the final A in CAROLINA, all the A punches feature crossbars, and the D of DOLLARS is tiny in comparison to the other letters. History of a sort is being made here as the collecting discipline of counterfeit Bechtler issues comes to the fore with the presentation of the Allen Collection. This choice specimen will be a focal point of a great collection for years to come, but only if a successful bid is tendered – and we know there will be at least one!

Obverse: CAROLINA GOLD. at rim from 8 to 4 o’clock around, AUGUST 1, 1834. in a semi-circle at center, 140 / .G. within, 20. above CARATS. at rim below.
Reverse: C. BECHTLER. AT RUTHERFORD. around, star at 9 o’clock, 5 at center, DOLLARS. curves below.

Die Alignment: about 200 degrees or modestly past coin turn.
