Colony of the Massachusetts Bay. May 25, 1775. Six Shillings. Fr. MA-140. PCGS Very Fine-25 Details. Multiple Repairs, Mounting Remnants. As illustrated.

Description: Printed on laid paper from plates engraved by Paul Revere; today’s collectors refer to them as “Copper Plate Notes.” Serial No. 758. Signed by Jedh. Foster and Henry Gardner, the latter with faded red X through the signature. 170mm by 80mm. Uniface. This is the lowest denomination on the series. Printed from an early state of the plate, with bold details in even the finest engraving strokes. A superb survivor from an issue of some 4,660 examples of the denomination. A strong note for the issue; these brittle pieces suffered greatly from folding and general activity in commerce, with a low survival rate the end result for today’s collectors. Nearly as nice as today’s specialist is apt to find, and worthy of lively bidding activity.

Pedigree: From Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part X, May, 2005, Lot 4629. (Ford Price Realized: $3,680)
