Colony of the Massachusetts Bay. August 18, 1775. Twenty Four Shillings. Fr. MA-171. PCGS Choice Extremely Fine-45 Details. Small Repairs. As illustrated.

Description: On rigid, thick, stock from plate engraved and printed by Paul Revere. Serial No. 6451. Signed by Wheeler and Prescott. 77mm by 97mm. Two-Sided, famous “Sword in Hand” impression on verso. A remarkable note with superb in-hand quality, and with overall paper quality that befits the assigned grade. According to the Ford writer, this note resembles a known counterfeit thirty shillings of the issue, but here it is simply a late-state back plate impression; all the other tells are in line with a genuine note. Bidding was furious when this note crossed the auction block in the Ford sale some 18 years ago. Here is an opportunity to obtain a high-grade "Sword In Hand" note, one that has been little touched by curatorial science, and one that would be difficult to improve upon for overall aesthetics.
